Cold Water Coast Pin Drop 3: Arcata Oysterfest 2005

Summer in the Sinkyone Wilderness

With Memorial Day 2025 now squarely in the history books we welcome the unofficial start of summer. And in about 3 months, when it’s mid-August, we’ll all be asking ourselves “Where did the summer go??”. So in the true spirit of exploration, let’s get dialed in for some summer adventures.

Lately, we've been collaborating with Skylar Silva of Ovr Thr Designs (IG: https://www.instagram.com/ovr.thr/z), a super talented Humboldt-based graphic designer and muralist. Skylar created the artwork for our Lost Coast hoodie and our most recent trucker hat (IG: https://www.coldwatercoast.com/shop). Skylar’s also been working with the annual Arcata Bay Oyster Festival on their merchandise for the June 14th celebration of everyone's favorite mollusk (though, let's be honest, abalone is pretty damn tasty too!).

Arcata, located in Humboldt County, sits on the northern edge of Humboldt Bay (often referred to as Arcata Bay). Settled in the mid-1800’s, Arcata has a classic old town layout complete with a town square. Each June, town square closes down for the day to play host to festival-goers as they meander amongst the food and merchandise vendors with echoes of live music wafting through the air. It’s sounds like a hoot and we’re making the trip north to check to check it out in a couple of weeks.

While we love our “recreational pursuits” here at Cold Water Coast, our first true love is pushing the the limits of our physical and mental endurance with a trip into the unknown. I’ve been thinking about a multi-day trek into the heart of the Sinkyone Wilderness to a small remote beach called Little Jackass. The coastal Sinkyone Wilderness straddles the Mendocino and Humboldt county line. The hike from the parking lot at Needle Rock Visitor’s Center to Little Jackass Beach is about 11 miles with ample up and down. And given the difficulty of the trail it’s not well traveled. The little information I’ve seen about the hike suggests that the trail may be completely overgrown and hard to find. Perfect.

The days are long, the water is warm(er). Don’t let the summer pass you by wishing you had taken that trip you’ve been thinking about. Let us know what you’ve got planned by sending an email to josiah@coldwatercoast.com. Stay coastal my friends.
